Smell gas at home? What to do, and how to call SNGPL (1199)
Natural gas has a smell added to it so that leaks can be noticed. SNGPL describes it as lighter than air. If you smell gas, act straight away.
If you smell gas
- Remove every source of ignition. Put out flames and cigarettes. Don't switch lights or appliances on or off, and don't use a lighter or matches.
- Turn off the gas supply at the meter or main valve if it is safe to reach.
- Open doors and windows to let the gas escape.
- Get everyone out and call SNGPL on 1199 from outside, well away from the smell.
- If there is a fire or someone feels unwell, call 1122.
Preventing leaks
- Have gas pipes, heaters and geysers installed and checked by qualified people.
- Replace old rubber hoses and loose fittings.
- Never leave heaters on in closed rooms while sleeping.
- A soapy-water test on joints shows leaks as bubbles. Never test with a flame.

Should I switch off the lights if I smell gas?
No. Don't operate any electrical switch, because a spark can ignite gas. Open windows, turn off the gas if safe, leave and call 1199 from outside.
